BUILDING WEIGHT

As described in a previous blog, unbonded post-tensioned concrete can reduce vertical construction elements.  Simply put, the less material used means less building weight (dead load).  The reduced weight can allow for smaller foundations and shear walls.  This can minimize excavation requirements, the need for caissons and possibility of affecting the water table.

With a reduced building weight due to unbonded post-tensioned concrete, there is potential savings for the following:

Construction

  1. Concrete Footings/Foundations/Caissons
  2. Concrete Shear walls
  3. Excavation
  4. Retaining Walls
  5. Pumping of water for underground work

Operational Life-Cycle Savings

  1. The impact (erosion) of building weight will be less the on surrounding land.
  2. The cost of pumping of water to control sub-terrain flooding can be reduced.
  3. Improved Seismic behavior.
  4. Reduced deflection and vibration.

Post tensioning completed on Minnesota Twins Ballpark

Minneapolis, Minnesota (Minnesota Twins Ballpark aka ‘Target Field’)

The final stage-stressing of the post tensioned concrete girders was completed several weeks ago.  Through the course of the high-profile project, AMSYSCO, Inc. supplied approx. 750,000 feet of post tensioning tendons (or 200 tons) along with installation drawings and engineering expertise.

An unbonded post tensioned flat-plate system was used in the Mezzanine level.  Additionally, post tensioned girders helped support the Main Concourse, Club, Suite, Upper and Terrace levels.  Since the open-air ballpark is exposed to weather, AMSYSCO’s encapsulated system was used to inhibit corrosion.

The ballpark will have seating capacity for 40,000 fans and should be ready for the 2010 Major League Baseball season.
